Terragrith
Terragrith was the result of the summer of 2002 when I had a lot of
free time on my hands. I wanted a place to focus all my creative
efforts and interests at the time, so I came up with a story setting
that mixed my loves from fantasy, sci-fi and totalitarian corruption
(even at 15 I was a little obsessed with 1984). Now, when it comes to
putting together my creative work to show to other people it seems
appropriate that I showcase it under the banner of
“Terragrith”.
The actual word Terragrith comes from combining the word
‘Terra’, which is Latin for ‘earth’ and
‘grith’ which is the Old Norse word for
‘sanctuary’. My Mother has to be thanked for helping me
find the name - after reading that Alan Garner always used real words
for naming things in his stories rather than made up words, I decided
that I wanted to as well. I went to my Mum and she handed me a glossary
of Old Norse words and suggested I used the word Terra. Since then I
haven't looked back, and I still regularly use Old Norse and Latin to
name characters, stories and even dialogue in university course work.
