Terragrith was the result of the summer of 2002 when Naomi had a lot of free time on her hands. She wanted a place to focus all her creative efforts and interests at the time, so she came up with a setting that mixed her love of fantasy, sci-fi and totalitarian corruption (even at 15 she was a little obsessed with 1984). Now, when it came to putting together her creative work to show to other people it seemed appropriate that it be showcased under the banner of “Terragrith”. The actual word Terragrith comes from combining the word ‘Terra’, which is Latin for ‘earth’ and ‘grith’ which is the Old Norse word for ‘sanctuary’. Naomi's mother has to be thanked for helping her find the name - after reading that author Alan Garner always used real words for naming things in his stories rather than made up words, Naomi decided that she wanted to do the same. She went to her Mum and was handed a glossary of Old Norse words and given the word Terra. The rest as they say, is history. Poet Elizabeth M. Rimmer has some of her translation work, as well as her writing samples online for you to see. |
